Adipose Tissue as an Endocrine Organ

Abstract
[Review article] In adulthood, almost no other organ can change size across as wide a range as adipose tissue. This variation differs among individuals: adipose tissue may account for only 2-3% of total body mass in athletes, or up to 60-70% of body mass in obese persons. Nowadays adipose tissue is considered a major endocrine organ of the body, releasing many factors related to insulin resistance syndrome. The hormones secreted by adipose tissue are called adipokines; these substances can cause disturbances in the insulin signaling pathway of target cells.
