SHORT - TERM MEMORY OF CHILDREN WITH HIGH RISK OF LEAD EXPOSURE

Abstract

Objective: describing the short term memory and its correlation with the plasma concentration of lead in high risk children of lead exposure in 6 southern provinces of Vietnam. Methods: conducted on 777 children aged 6-10 years living in high-risk areas exposed to lead to. The children were taken blood to test blood lead levels by ICP-MS method and assessed short-term memory by memory tests: (animal-shaped memory, triangles memmory, digital memory, verbal memory). Results: About animal-shaped memory test: the average total correct memory score in children with blood lead ≥10µg/dL is 7.5±3.2 points, in children with blood lead <10µg/dL is 7.3±3.1 points; The average correct memory score in children with blood lead 210µg/ L is 6.1±3.4 points, in children with blood lead <10µg /dL is 6.3±3.3 points. About triangles memmory test: the average total number of correct memory points in children with blood lead ≥10µg/dL is 5.3±0.9 points, in children with blood lead <10µg/dL is 5.1±0.9 points; The average correct memory score in children with blood lead ≥10µg/dL was 3.0±1.1 points, in children with blood lead <10µg/dL was 3.4±0.9 points. About digital memory test: the average total memory score in children with blood lead ≥10µg/dL is 5.8±2.8 points, in children with blood lead <10µg/dL is 5.8±2.6 points; The average correct memory score in children with blood lead
210µg/dL is 4.4±2.2 points, in children with blood lead <10µg/dL is 4.6±2.4 points. About verbal memory test: in the group of children with blood lead ≥10µg/dL, the total memory score is 14.8±2.8, the word remember score is 12.1±2.3 рoints, the word remember backwards is 2.7±1.3 points; In children with blood lead <10µg/dL, corresponding points were 16,0±2,7 points; 13.0±2.2 points and 2.9±1.5 points. In the group with blood lead 210µg/dL correct
memory point (triangles memmory test); the total memory score and memory points (word remember score) was lower than that among children with blood lead <10µg/dL statistical significantlly (p<0.05). Conclusion: there is a decrease in short-term memory among children exposed to lead.
