Effect of Microsurgical Varicocelectomy on Human Sperm DNA Integrity in Male Infertility with Varicocele
Main Article Content
Abstract
A prospective study was conducted on 89 infertile patients with left clinical varicocele who underwent microsurgical varicocelectomy at Hanoi Medical University Hospital, from January 2014 to December 2015. The results showed that the mean DFI of patients with varicocele was significantly higher than the control group (34.9 ± 21.0% vs 21.7 ± 8.5%, p < 0.001). Sperm DNA integrity was significantly improved after microsurgical varicocelectomy (mean DFI decreased from 38.2 ± 22% to 29.1 ± 16.6% postoperatively, p=0.007). In the high preoperative DFI subgroup, the mean postoperative DFI decreased more significantly compared with the low preoperative DFI subgroup. In conclusion, sperm DNA integrity was significantly affected in infertile patients with varicocele, and microsurgical varicocelectomy improved DFI significantly. The preoperative DFI level was associated with the degree of postoperative improvement.
