Anh: OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY AMONG NEWLY REGISTERED STUDENTS AT THANG LONG UNIVERSITY IN SCHOOL YEAR 2012 - 2014

Abstract
Overweight and obesity were mentioned as important risk factors of
noncommunicable diseases. A cross-sectional study was conducted to describe student's
overweight and obesity, using their height and weight data from entrance health
examinations of the 5097 students at Thang Long University in school years 2012 - 2014
and direct interview of 150 newly registered students in 2014. Obtained results showed
that student's overweight and obesity rate has increased, from 13.1% in 2012 to 16.1% in
2013 and 19.4% in 2014 (p<0.05). Overweight and obesity rate of male students during
these years (respectively 26.5%, 30.6%, 34.6%) were higher than that of female students
(respectively 7.3%, 8, 2%, 11.7%), p<0.01. Students who eat more than 3 times per day
will have overweight and obesity risk in 2.2 times higher than students who eat less than 3
times / day (p<0.05); students who eat in-between snacks frequently will have risk of
overweight and obesity in 2.2 times higher than students who never eat snacks and
students who do not play sport will have risk of overweight / obesity in 1.4 times higher
than students who often play sports. In addition, the rate of hypertension among students
suffering from overweight and obesity is not high but increasing by year.
