THE NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY OF THE UPPER LIMB IN HEALTHY ADULTS AGED 40–60 YEARS

Abstract

Nerve conduction study (NCS) of the upper limb is a common diagnostic test used to evaluate the conductive function of the motor and sensory nerves (medial, ulnar and radial nerve).


Objectives: To assess the conduction study of medial, ulnar and radial nerve in healthy adults aged 40-60.


Methods: The sample is 30 subjects, aged 40–60 years, randomly selected at the medical center No.1 Ton That Tung, Hanoi Medical University. These subjects were then examined about the nerve conduction study of medial, ulnar and radial nerves by NEUROpack 9400 equipment, NihonKoden, Japan.


Results: the motor conduction velocity of medial and ulnar nerve in arm segment is respective 57,61±4,17m/s and 57,10±4,19m/s, in forearm is 65,27±6,75 m/s and 63,24±5,24m/s. In wrist-palm segment, the sensory conduction velocity of medial and ulnar nerve is 56,13±3,92m/s and 57,62±4,40m/s. The motor conduction velocity of radial nerve in the forearm - arm segment is 67.12 ± 7.89m/s. The sensory conduction velocity of radial nerve is 63,87±5,22 m/s in wrist-palm segment.


Conclusion: The nerve conduction volecity of the upper limb in the proximal segment is faster than the distal segment. These above parameters that can be used to as a reference assessing nerve conduction study on the patients.
