Abstract

Objective: Describe clinical characteristics and EEG in patients with chronic headache at Can Tho City General Hospital in 2025. Methods: A total of 100 patients examined at Can Tho City General Hospital for chronic headache were assigned to have EEG measurement from March 2025 to September 2025. Results: 48% of patients had specific pain locations, 64% of patients had intermittent pain, 40% of patients had moderate pain, 15% of patients had pulsatile pain, 20% had a feeling of photophobia, 21% of patients had nausea, 15% of patients had autonomic nervous system disorders. Brain waves recorded in background activity have the following characteristics: alpha waves with frequency 9.7 ± 1.05Hz, average amplitude 42.4 ± 19.2μV; Beta waves have a frequency of 15.0 ± 1.0Hz, an average amplitude of 7.9 ± 3.4μV. The proportion of chronic headache patients with abnormal EEG is 28%. There are 3 types as follows: reduced cortical activity accounts for 34%, presence of theta slow waves accounts for 6%, and absence of delta slow waves and paroxysmal activity. Conclusion: Chronic headache in the study had diverse clinical characteristics in which 28% of patients had EEG abnormalities, mainly impaired cortical activity and theta slow waves.
