CLINICAL FEATURES AND MEDIAN NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY ON CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Abstract

Objectives: (1) Describe clinical features and research indexes of median nerve motor and sensory conduction velocity. (2) Evaluate the grading value of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) severity by 2 parameters: difference between median and ulnar distal motor latency and difference between median and ulnar distal sensory latency. Methods: Cross-sectional study on study parameters carried on 73 hands with CTS clinical symptoms of 42 patients. Results: CTS
was a condition of middle-aged individuals, affects females more often than males and both hands. The most common symptoms were paraesthesia (94,5%) and noctural paraesthesia (54,8). Positive Phalen test is highest (84,9%). Difference between median and ulnar distal motor (83,6 %) and sensory latency (54,8%) are the most sensitive parameters to diagnose CTS early. There was no significant difference between the two above ratios in severity grading.
Conclusion: CTS should be suspected in any patients with paraesthesia in the distribution of median nerve distal to wrist. Difference between median and ulnar distal motor and sensory latency could help the early diagnosis and the grading CTS severity.
