RESEARCH ON THE CONDITION OF TYMPANIC MEMBRANCE DURING ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE ON EARS IN MILITARY PILOT STUDENT

Abstract

Objectives: describing the change of tympanometry and tympanic membrance's conditions when using Maico MI-26 to test atmospheric pressure on ears in hypobaric chamber. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study on 50 participants who are about to be military pilot students, by which to investigate abnormal ear pathology of the middle ears if any. Results: Before atmospheric pressure: The forms of tympanic membrance, tympanometry, ear pressure of 50 cases (100 ears) are normal. No ear pathology is recorded. After atmospheric pressure: clarity tympanic membrance: Congestion degree 1 (right ear- 18%, left ear -17%); Congestion degree 2 (right ear- 0%, left ear - 6%); Congestion degree 3 (right ear- 4%, left ear 4%); 9 cases that both ears suffer from congestion (18%). tympanometry type C (right ear - 4%, left ear - 4%); Type Ad (right ear - 10%, left ear - 12%), 5 cases (10%) that tympanometry is changed in both ears with 2 type C - 4% and 3 type Ad(8%). Pressure on tympanic cavity is reduced (right ear -4%, left ear - 6%). There is no case with the increase in pressure. There are 2 cases with pressure being reduced on both ears (4%). There is an increase in the clearness of right ear (10%), left ear (8%); a decrease in right ear (4%), left ear (4%). There are 2 cases with both ears' clearness being reduced (4%) and cases (6%) with both ears' clearness being increased.
Fluid in tympanic cavity of the right and left ear accounts for 2% and 2% respectively. There is an interruption with the ear bone chain in the right ear (10%) and left ear (8%). There is pressure reduction along with fluid in the typanic cavity of right ear (2%) and left ear (4%); fluid in the typanic cavity and fixed ear bone chain of both right ear and left ear accounts for 2%. There are 6 cases (12%) of both ears are injured. There is no correlation between the
morphology of eardrum and the degree off the middle ear's damage, with very weake correlation (r = 0,05). Conclusion: There is change in tympanic membrance's form and tympanometry after the air pressure. It tends to occur with both ears at different extents. There is no correlation between the morphology of eardrum and the degree off the middle ear's damage.
