Abstract

Objectives: To determine the mean distance of the six minute walk test (6MWT) and related factors in community dwelling elderly. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 516 subjects aged 60 years or older at Soc Son District, Hanoi. Subjects performed the 6MWT following the guidance of the American Thoracic Society (2002). Results were measured in meters. Results: The average age of subjects was 69.01 ± 8.28; 154 male and 362 female. The mean six minute walk test distance was 384.05 ± 83.56 m. There was a statistically significant relationship between age, gender and body mass index with 6MWT (p<0.05), in which higher age, female gender and obese BMI were associated with reduced six minute walk test distance. Conclusion: The average six minute walk test distance in community dwelling elderly was dependent on age, gender and body mass index.
