Effects of Diving Factors on Rabbit's Experimental Decompression Sickness

Abstract
Aims: Evaluation of the effect of bottom time, ascent rate, and repeated compression on decompression sickness. Subjects: 40 rabbits, 3 months old. Methods: Compressing to hyperpressure by hyperbaric chamber following 4 different protocols. Rabbit status was observed pre- and post-experiment for 30 minutes, including morbidity rate and clinical score. Results: Increasing the bottom time from 4 hours to 5 hours increased risk 2-fold (p<0.01) and increased clinical scores (p<0.01); repeated compression increased risk 1.5-fold (p<0.05) but did not significantly increase clinical scores (p>0.05); increasing the ascent rate from 10 m/min to 15 m/min did not increase the risk of decompression sickness. The bottom time had the strongest effect, p<0.0001-0.01. Conclusion: Bottom time and repeated compression increased the risk of decompression sickness, while ascent rate did not. Among the 3 factors, bottom time had the strongest effect on decompression sickness.
