Abstract

Objective: To describe clinical and subclinical characteristics of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in elderly patients, and to describe the electrophysiological characteristics of AVRT attacks in these patients. Methods: 73 patients diagnosed with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia underwent cardiac electrophysiology exploration and treatment by radiofrequency (RF) ablation at Vietnam Heart Institute from 02/2014 to 10/2014. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I (n=34) was the control group (patients <60 years) and Group II (n=39) was the research group (patients ≥60 years). Results: 26.5% of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia attacks were AVRT in Group II (less common than AVNRT attacks). Only 8.8% of elderly patients had WPW syndrome. The basic cycle length in the elderly group with AVRT attacks (816±101.3 ms) was longer than in the group <60 years (686.3±85.8 ms) and in women (p<0.05). The elderly group had a longer effective refractory period of the atrial and ventricular muscle than the group <60 years (p<0.05). Conclusion: 26.5% of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia attacks were AVRT, more common in women than men; the older the patient, the lower the rate of AVRT attacks. The basic cycle length and the effective refractory period of the atrial and ventricular muscle in elderly patients were longer than in younger patients.
