BRAINSTEM AUDITORY EVOKED POTENTIALS IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus affects on many organ systems, including the central nervous system. Objective: to determine the changes in the brainstem auditory evoked potentials in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: it was a cross sectional study with controls. 47 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus (disease group) and 47 healthy controls (control group) were included in the study. Results: frequency of waves I, II, III, IV and V are 100%, 85.1%, 100%, 80.8% and 100%. Mean peak latency of waves I, II, III, IV, V were prolonged in disease group, were statistically significant. The interpeak latency of I-III, III-V, I-V were prolonged in disease group, but were not statistically significant. The amplitude of waves I, III of the BAEP showed a statistical significance between the disease group and control group. Conclusions: BAEP is a useful method for obtaining an early diagnosis of central and cranial nerve abnormalities in type 2 diabetic mellitus
