Abstract

Fifty eight healthy neonates were recorded for EEG in the course of sleep to characterise and quantify the EEG during sleep in healthy newborn for the first 3 neonatal days. From each EEG record, two 5-min recorded segments (one from quiet sleep, QS, and one from active sleep, AS) were subject to an off-line computerized analysis. 5-minute segments of EEG labelled as active sleep and quiet sleep were quantitatively analysed for each recording to assess the symmetry and synchrony of the EEG signal in both hemispheres. It was also used to calculate a number of quantitative measures: Spectral Edge Frequency (SEF) and Relative delta power (dR). The number of variables was reduced by means of factor analysis. The results of quantitative EEG analysis on sleep epochs showed that SEF and dR were significantly higher $(p < 0.0001)$ but dR was significantly lower $(p < 0.0001)$ in AS than those in QS. We concluded that the normal newborn EEG shows symmetrical and synchronous continuous activity. Quantitative analysis of the EEG differed in SEF, dR for AS and QS periods.
