CHARACTERISTICS OF EEG IN QUIET AND ACTIVE SLEEP IN TERM NEWBORN BABIES

Abstract
The study was performed on seventy five term healthy newborn babies for EEG (eight channels) recording while they were sleeping to characterise the EEG during sleep in term healthy neonates. All neonates showed well-developed sleep-wake cycling (SWC) with the median percentage for active sleep (AS) was 64.24% and for quiet sleep (QS) was 34.75%.
The background EEG pattern during QS in term neonates characterized by bursts of high amplitude as theta and delta waves (50–100 $\mu$V, even up to 200 $\mu$V) for 3–10 seconds, mixing high (3.0–8.0 Hz) and low (0.5–1.5 Hz) frequencies, followed by alpha, beta waves with lower amplitude for 3–5 seconds. AS period consisted of mixed continuous high frequencies with various amplitudes. The present study showed that AS duration accounted for a half, and QS duration for a third. During the QS period, the EEG pattern was mature tracé alternant. There were no significant differences in percentage of the AS and QS durations among days in the first 3-neonatal days.
