BODY PLETHYSMOGRAPHY STUDY OF FUNCTIONAL RESIDUAL CAPACITY, AIRWAY RESISTANCE, AND SPECIFIC AIRWAY RESISTANCE IN HEALTHY ADULTS

Abstract
Pulmonary plethysmography is a widely used method in basic and preclinical research to study respiration by measuring precisely several respiratory parameters. Our research using this method conducted on 155 healthy adults divided into five groups of age (19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-69) aiming at measuring functional residual capacity (FRC), airway resistance (Raw), specific airway resistance (sRaw), and their correlations with age, height, body weight, and body mass index (BMI).
The results showed that sRaw tended to increase with age in both genders, in males it tended to be higher than that in women in almost groups of age ($p > 0.05$); FRC and Raw did not differ in all groups of age ($p > 0.05$). FRC, Raw, and sRaw showed no correlation with age ($p > 0.05$). Height positively correlated with FRC and sRaw ($p < 0.01$), and inversely correlated with Raw. The body weight positively correlated with FRC and sRaw ($p < 0.01$), but not with Raw. FRC, Raw, and sRaw did not correlate with the BMI.
