Abstract

Background and aim: One of the key factors when conducting
colonoscopy is a safe and fast bowel cleansing procedure. This study evaluates the
acceptance and safety of sodium phosphate solution regimen in children undergoing
colonoscopy. Materials and Methods: 113 children scheduled for a diagnostic colonoscopy,
were received sodium phosphate solution. Results: Mean age was 5.3 ± 2.0 (3-14years),
male/female ratio was 2,1:1. Excelent and very good cleansing was rated in 36.3% and good
cleansing in 28.3%. Vomiting, nausea and abdominal distention rate was 77% and 42.5%
respectively. A mean serum phosphorus increased by 1.13 mmol/l. Mean ion calcium and
total calcium reduced by 0.23 mmol/l and 0.09 mmol/l, respectively. Sodium increased in a
normal range and potassium decreased on average by 0.8 mmol/l. Conclusion: Sodium
phosphate solution is an effective colon cleansing but lead to some changes in electrolytes.
Futher time study is needed to evaluated long side effect.
