PRENATAL EXPOSURE TO VALPROIC ACID ALTERED BEHAVIOURS IN RATS

Abstract
This study was conducted in order to model experimentally the autism
in laboratory rats by intraperitoneal injection of valproic acid (VPA) dosed 500 and 600
mg/kg at 12.5 gestational day and assessed behavioral changes in pubs. The results showed
1) deficit in pub's ultrasound vocalization and 2) prenatal exposure to VPA impaired
attention-switching ability. Though exposure to VPA during gestation seemed unaffected
learning and memory abilities, but deteriorated their flexibility. Thus, prenatal exposure
VPA dosed 500 and 600 mg/kg compromised communicative and cognitive functions in
rat's pubs. Therefore, these doses could be used to replicate autism-like behavioral trait
experimentally in rats.
