Abstract

Fifty eight healthy neonates were recorded for EEG in the course of
sleep to characterise and quantify the EEG parameters during sleep in healthy newborns for
the first 3 neonatal days. From each EEG record, two 5-min recorded segments (one from
quiet sleep, QS, and one from active sleep, AS) were off-line analysed for 11 parameters. The
results of quantitative EEG analyses on sleep epochs showed that all recordings contained
continuous, EEG activity at amplitudes ranging from 6.8-160.6 μV across all sleep states.
The value of energy of the delta wave band is higher than that of the theta and alpha wave
bands in both sleep states.
