CURCUMINOIDS SUPPRESS THE DEVELOPMENT OF KMS-20 CELLS VIA ALTERATING MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION

Abstract
We examined the effects of natural curcuminoids natural turmeric
extract on mitochondrial function and on the development of human multiple myeloma cell
line (KMS-20). We found that Cu, CuT2 and positive control drugs (DOX, RES) effectively
reduced the survival rate of KMS-20 cell compared to those in DMSO-treated cells.
Similar to DOX and RES, cardiolipin contents, a lipid component of inner mitochondrial
membrane, were significantly decreased in Cu- and CuT2-cancer cells (38.09±14.52,
47.87±12.48, respectively, p<0.05); while in DMSO group, this value was 100.00±3.78.
Interestingly, levels mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen spices were
also markedly altered in DOX-, RES-, Cu-, and CuT2-treated KMS-20 cells. Overall, our
results documented for the first time the evidence the roles of natural curcuminoids in
suppressing the development of KMS-20 and in changing mitochondrial function.
