DISORDERS OF LIVER FUNCTIONS ON MEN WORKING IN AIRBASES OF BIEN HOA, DA NANG, AND PHU CAT

Abstract

Objectives: The airbases of Bien Hoa, Da Nang, and Phu Cat are hotspots of dioxin contamination in Vietnam. This study estimated disorders of liver functions of men, who are working in these airbases. Methods: Total 677 male soldiers and workers in three dioxincontaminated airbases of Bien Hoa (n=291), Da Nang (n= 215), and Phu Cat (n=171) were recruited for the study. The subjects were 20-50 years old and worked inside the airbases for at
least 1 year. Basic information of subjects was collected by questionnaires. Indexes of liver functions including total, direct and indirect bilirubin, and GOT, GPT, GGT in serum were measured. Abnormal images of liver were observed from abdominal ultrasonic examinations. Results: Subjects with high total bilirubin (>17 pmol/L) contained 4,5 % of total subjects. The rate of high GOT (>37 IU/L) was 30,2% in Bien Hoa, and 38,3% in Da Nang. Similarly, the rate
of high GPT (>40 IU/L) was highest in Bien Hoa (42,7%), followed by Da Nang (28,0%), and Phu Cat (24,7%). However, the rate of high GGT (>50 IU/L) in Bien Hoa was only 7,8%, but in Da Nang and Phu Cat was 57,5% and 37,1%, respectively. On the ultrasonic examinations, fatty liver images were most frequently observed, especially in Bien Hoa (23,5%), and Da Nang (22,0%). Conclusion: Male soldiers and workers in three dioxin- contaminated airbases of Bien
Hoa, Da Nang, and Phu Cat showed a high rate of liver function disorders expressing by increases of liver enzymes and fatty liver.
