ZEBRAFISH (DANIO RERIO) AND MEDAKA (ORYZIAS LATIPES) AS ANIMAL MODELS OF HUMAN DISEASES

Abstract
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes) are small teleost fish native to the rice paddies and small water bodies in South and Southeast Asia including Vietnam. These two fish
species have shown excellent experimental advantages that make their use as animal models
complementary to mammals. They share high similarity to human in protein coding genes and
biological processes, therefore have been increasingly used as animal models for research in
biology and biomedicine, especially as models for most of human diseases such as diseases
and disorders in the nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune systems, cancer, and bone
diseases; these disease models have showed high effectivity in drug screening and development. There are numerous findings in biomedicine and drug discovery based or research using these fish models. It is noteworthy that the cost for laboratory maintaining of these fish is much lower than that for traditional mammalian models like mice. However, in Vietnam, the use of fish as animal models is still largely unknown. Here we describe biological characteristics, common experimental techniques and review recent human disease models generated in these two fish. We would like to introduce the use of these fish to research community in Vietnam and hope for its development in near future.
