A STUDY OF GLYCEMIC PROFILE, INSULIN RESISTANCE AND BETA CELL FUNCTION IN THE FEMALE SUBJECTS WITH VEGAN DIET

Abstract

Objectives: assessing the effects of long-term vegan diet on the glycemic profile, insulin resistance and beta cell function in female subjects.


Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study, including of 144 female vegans with aged from 20-75 with duration of vegan diet ranged 10-70 years, and 68 women who were not in vegan diet, aged from 22-84 yrs. They were screened for fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting Insulin, HOMA-IR and HOMA-% B.


Results: The prevalence of hyperglycemia (based on fasting glucose) in female Vegan group was higher than in the control group (13,2% vs 10,3%, p < 0,05), HbA1c in female Vegan group was higher than in the control group (5,9 ±0,9 vs 4,3 ± 0,90 %, p< 0,05). Proportion of FI ≥12 μU/ml in the vegan group was different from control group. Proportion of HOMA-IR ≥ 2,6 in the vegan group was higher than in the control group (9,7% vs 1,5%, p<0,05). The average HOMA-IR index difference was not statistical (p > 0,05), HOMA-%B < 116% was not different between two groups (p>0,05). Beta cell dysfunction was 17 yrs. There were a relation betwwen vegan time and HbA1c (r=0.403). Diagnosing value of beta cell sysfunction was 17 years, of hyperglycemia was 18 years, of insulin disorders was 23 years.


Conclusion: Long-term vegan diet causes hyperglycemia after beta cell dysfunction.
