STUDYING ON RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CONCENTRATIONS OF PLASMA SEROTONIN AND NON-MOTOR SYMPTOMS IN PATIENTS WITH PARKINSON DISEASE

Abstract
Objective: Investigating the relationships between concentrations of plasma serotonin and non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkison disease. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional study, 45 patients with Parkinson's disease and 40 without Parkinson's disease. Results: Almost patients in PD group were over 50 years old with 91.1%, in which from 60 to 69 years old was 42.2%. The mean age of the patient's group was 63.98±9.84 years old; the control group was 61.77±9.53 years old. There was no significant difference between the two groups with p>0.05. The level of serotonin in plasma in the depression group (148.37±18.66 ng/ml) and cognitive impairment group (145.74±20.68 ng/ml) was decreased significantly compared to that in the non-depression group (163.81±1.49 ng/ml) and non-cognitive impairment group (158.87±11.60 ng/ml). There was a negative correlation between the level of serotonin and the score of depression with correlated coefficients r = -0.665 and there was a positive correlation between the level of serotonin and the score of cognitive impairment with correlated coefficients r = 0.559. Conclusion: the present study provided new evidence of relationships between concentrations of plasma serotonin and non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson disease.
