STUDY ON ATHEROGENIC INDICES IN SUBJECTS WITH PURE VEGETARIAN

Abstract
Objectives: 1) Examine the atherogenic indices including Non HDL.Cholesterol,
TC/HDL.Cholesterol ratio, LDL.Cholesterol /HDL.Cholesterol ratio and TG/HDL. Cholesterol ratio. 2) To evaluate the relationship between duration of vegan diet and the changes of the atherogenic indices in the subjects with pure vegetarian. Methods: Cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study. Research indices including TC/HDL, TG/HDL.C, LDL.C/HDL.C ratio with the risk of atherogenesis for Non-HDL.C ≥ 3.4 mmol/l, TC / HDL-C ratio ≥ 4, TG/HDL- C ratio ≥ 2.4 and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio ≥ 2.3. Results: The vegan subjects had significantly lower atherogenic indices (Non HDL.C, TC.HDL.C and LDL.C/ HDL.C) compared to the control group (p <0.01- 0.05) but the ratio TG / HDL.C has no difference (p> 0.05). In which, the risk ratio of the pure vegan group included Non-HDL.C (30.7% - 47.1%), TC/HDL.C (30.7% - 39.5%) and
LDL.C /HDL.C 26.7% -40%) were both lower than the control group (p < 0.01-0.05) but the TG / HDL.C ratio was not different between the 2 groups (p> 0, 05). According to the duration of vegan diet less than 10 years, 10-20 years and over 20 years, the values of Non HDL.C levels respectively were 2.69± 0.88, 3.01 ± 0.86 and 3.74 ± 1, 01 mmol /l, p <0.01), the TC / HDL.C ratio were 3.26 ± 0.89, 3.50 ± 0.83 and 4.22 ± 0.94, p <0.01) , TG / HDL.C ratio were 1.22 ± 1.12, 1.27 ± 0.80 and 2.00 ± 1.47, p <0.01) and the LDL.C / HDL.C ratio were 1, 74 ± 0.68, 1.92 ± 0.59 and 2.37 ± 0.70, p <0.01). There was a strong correlation between the duration of vegan diet with Non HDL.C (r = 0.440, n = 311, p <0.01), TC / HDL.C (r= 0.407), TG/HDL.C (r = 0.284), and LDL.C / HDL.C (r = 0.363). Predictive value of dyslipidemia by duration of vegan diet for TC / HDL.C ≥ 4 (AUC = 0.744, p <0.01), TG / HDL.C ≥ 2.4 (AUC = 0.665, p <0.01) and LDL.C/HDL.C2 2.3 (AUC = 0.690, p <0.01) all were 18 years. However, Non HDL.C ≥ 3.4 (AUC = 0.707, P <0.01) was 26 years of vegan diet. Conclusions: The pure vegetarian diet was effective on cholesterol-related atherogenic indices for at least 18 years
