Abstract

The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Dr. James E. Rothman (Yale University – USA), Dr. Randy W. Schekman (Stanford University – USA) and Dr. Thomas C. Südhof (a German working in California University – USA) for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in the cells. This represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of how the eukaryotic cell, with its complex internal compartmentalization, organizes the routing of molecules packaged in vesicles to various intracellular destinations, as well as to the outside of the cell. These transported moleculars may be hormones, neurotransmitters and moleculars required for processing strange substances in the cells... This mechanism is very essential for the cells and disturbances in that have deleterious effects and contribute disorders or diseases. Therefore, this mechanism of transport system in the cell also became a target for treatment of some diseases or target for effect of some biological products.
