OUTCOMES OF MECHANICAL THROMBECTOMY IN THE TREATMENT OF ACUTE ISCHEMIC STROKE DUE TO LARGE VESSEL OCCLUSION AT KIEN GIANG GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Mechanical thrombectomy has been proven effective in patients with acute ischemic stroke caused by large-vessel occlusion. Methods: This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of mechanical thrombectomy in 243 patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large-vessel occlusion who were admitted to Kien Giang General Hospital between May 2023 and December 2025. Results: The mean age of the patients was 62.4 ± 12.8 years, and middle cerebral artery occlusion accounted for 46.1% of cases. The mean times from hospital admission to partial and complete recanalization were 359 ± 211 minutes and 393 ± 224 minutes, respectively. Recanalization time was significantly associated with the degree of recanalization (p = 0.002). Successful recanalization was achieved in 93% of patients. The mean NIHSS score decreased from 16.8 ± 6.7 at admission to 9.9 ± 9.2 at discharge. At three months, 44% of patients achieved a modified Rankin Scale score of 0–2, 26% had moderate disability, and 30% had severe disability or had died. Procedure-related complications occurred in 7.4% of patients. Conclusion: Mechanical thrombectomy was associated with favorable functional recovery in patients with acute ischemic stroke caused by large-vessel occlusion.
