MTHFR C677T POLYMORPHISM IN PREGNANT WOMEN WITH GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS AT CAN THO OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the rs1801133 (MTHFR C677T) polymorphism in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus at Can Tho Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical components was conducted on 96 pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus at Can Tho Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024. Results: Among the participants, 63.5% were younger than 35 years, 61.5% had a normal pre-pregnancy BMI, and 82.3% had no family history of diabetes. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 65.6%, 31.3%, and 3.1%, respectively, while the frequencies of C and T alleles were 81.3% and 18.8%. Genotype distribution was consistent with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (χ² = 0.063, p = 0.802). No statistically significant differences were observed in genotype, allele, or genotype model distributions according to maternal age, pre-pregnancy BMI, family history of diabetes, gestational stage, or gestational age (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The CC genotype and C allele were the predominant genetic variants of the MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus in this study. The findings provide baseline data on the distribution of the MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism in this study population.
