Abstract

Objective: To investigate the ability of surface recording electrodes to record electromyographic (EMG) signals during the tetany test. Methods: We describe a series of patients with clinical features suggestive of latent tetany despite normal serum calcium and magnesium levels at Phenikaa University Hospital. Electromyography (EMG) was performed using surface recording electrodes to record spontaneous electrical activity. Results: Among four evaluated patients, one exhibited spontaneous potentials during the ischemic phase, while the remaining three showed spontaneous activity during the hyperventilation phase. The spontaneous potentials persisted for more than 2 minutes in all patients. These spontaneous potentials were characterized by repetitive, uniform waveforms occurring in grouped patterns, including doublets, triplets, quadruplets, and ultimately multiplet discharges. Conclusion: The use of surface recording electrodes in the tetany test  is capable of recording spontaneous electrical activity.
