TRADITIONAL MEDICINE PERSPECTIVE ON PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE: FROM PATHOGENESIS TO TREATMENT
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To systematize the perspectives of Traditional Medicine on peptic ulcer disease, including pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation, and treatment methods, while synthesizing modern research related to the application of Traditional Medicine in treating this pathology. Methods: This review was conducted through the analysis and synthesis of medical literature from scientific databases, clinical trials, meta-analyses, and Traditional Medicine textbooks. The content focuses on the pathogenesis of "Wei Guan Tong" (epigastric pain), common syndromes, and pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological treatment methods from the perspective of Traditional Medicine. Results: According to Traditional Medicine, peptic ulcer disease is primarily categorized under the scope of "Wei Guan Tong", which involves functional dysregulation among the Liver, Spleen, and Stomach, leading to qi mechanism disorders in the middle jiao. The disease can manifest in various syndromes such as Liver-Stomach disharmony, Spleen-Stomach weakness, damp-heat stagnation, blood stasis obstruction, or Stomach yin deficiency. In treatment, Traditional Medicine applies the principle of syndrome differentiation and treatment, utilizing classical formulas, herbal medicines, and non-pharmacological therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and acupoint catgut embedding. Numerous studies demonstrate that these methods can improve symptoms, promote gastric mucosal healing, and enhance therapeutic efficacy when combined with modern medicine. Conclusion: Traditional Medicine provides a comprehensive treatment approach for peptic ulcer disease. The integration of Traditional Medicine methods with modern medicine can contribute to improving therapeutic efficacy, reducing the risk of recurrence, and enhancing the quality of life for patients.
