Abstract

Objective: This study investigated the morphological and functional changes of the brachial artery in healthy young people (18-39 years old) by 2D, TM and Doppler ultrasound before and immediately after forced hand exercise. Methods: Data were collected from 204 brachial arteries in 102 subjects (48 men, 54 women). Results: Brachial artery diameter increased slightly, blood flow velocity (Vs, Vd, Vm) increased significantly (Vs from 69.8cm/s to 122.3cm/s; Vd from 5.5cm/s to 40.0cm/s; Vm from 18.0cm/s to 65.1cm/s) and blood flow increased nearly 4 times (from 104.8ml/min to 399.5ml/min) after exertion. Impedance indices (RI, PI, Vs/Vm) decreased significantly (RI from 0.94 to 0.66; PI from 4.38 to 1.32). There were differences in brachial artery size and blood flow between men and women, as well as some changes in impedance and flow between the two age groups 18-29 and 30-39 after forced hand exercise. Conclusion: These findings contribute to supplementing the reference parameters for brachial artery ultrasound under normal physiological conditions and during physical activity.
