Abstract
Objective: To evaluate quality of life and some related factors in patients with metabolic syndrome. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted on 70 patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to NCEP-ATP III criteria. Health-related quality of life was assessed using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.5 years. The mean SAF-36 composite score was 67.6 ± 16.5 in which the physical health score was 60.9 ± 19.8 and the mental health score was 74.3 ± 17.8. There was 25.7% of the patients who showed low quality of life with a total SF-36 score ≤ 50. Increased blood glucose and LDL levels were observed in the group showing poor quality of life (p<0.05). Similarly, women, the group of who smoked, and alcohol consumption had an increased rate of poor quality of life as compared with men, the group of non-smokers, and non-drinkers (p<0.05). Conclusion: The quality of life of patients with metabolic syndrome tended to decrease. Glucose, LDL levels, gender, smoking status, and alcohol consumption were factors affecting quality of life in patients with metabolic syndrome.
